South African troops sent on their first post-apartheid foreign intervention mission, to restore stability to Lesotho on Tuesday (22/9) met fierce resistance from soldiers and bitter opposition from anti-government protesters. By nightfall, the South Africans were still engaged in a raging battle with Lesotho soldiers for control of the Makonyane military base outside Maseru with the local troops well entrenched on the hillside where the barracks is sited.
