A 48-year-old man has died following an accident at a parking garage for the Sherwin-Williams building in downtown Cleveland.
Cleveland police tell 3News it was around 12:02 a.m. Friday when officers responded to the scene in the 1300 block of West 3rd Street.
When officers arrived, EMS and fire personnel were already on the scene where the man was found underneath a tow motor that he had been operating.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cleveland police say the Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
In a Facebook post, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb identifies the man as Joe Cunningham.
STATEMENTS
Mayor Bibb
This morning’s horrible accident is a reminder that jobs in the building trades not only require great skill, but they also make physical demands that many of us do not face. Along with the entire city of Cleveland, I mourn the loss of Joe Cunningham and offer my condolences to his family, his loved ones and his union brothers and sisters in Laborers Local 310.
Laborers Local 310
A tragic accident happened this morning at the Sherwin-Williams project, claiming the life of our brother, Joe Cunningham of Laborers Local 310.
There are no words strong enough for a loss like this. Joe was a dedicated laborer, a proud union man, and someone who showed up each day ready to work hard, shoulder to shoulder with his brothers and sisters. He was part of the backbone of this project—and of the working class that builds this city from the ground up.
This morning’s tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous our work can be. One moment, a man is doing his job—the next, he’s gone. No family should have to get that call. No crew should have to witness it. And no worker should lose their life on the job.
To Joe’s family, friends, and the entire Local 310 community: we are grieving with you. We will remember Joe not just for how he died, but for how he lived—with strength, pride, and a deep commitment to his craft and his union.
Rest in peace , Joe Cunningham. We will carry your name with us. Always.
Julie Young, Vice President of Global Corporate Communications for Sherwin-Williams

Emergency response was immediately notified and was quickly on the scene. No one else was injured. We share our deepest sympathies with the family, loved ones, and co-workers. Safety remains our highest priority, and we are supporting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
