Описание: St Augustine’s comments on the first Beatitude, which reads in Matthew, Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, and also Luke’s first Beatitude, which simply reads, Blessed are the Poor, is referenced in the Catholic Catechism under the commandment, Do Not Envy. Giving alms to the poor helps fight the sin of envy, since it loosens the grip that your possessions have on your soul.

These are the beatitudes:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

We will also ponder:
• Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders, the wise who built their house on the rocks, the foolish who built their house on the sand.
• How God will provide for us as He provides for the birds in the air and the lilies in the field.
• The tension between meekness and justice.
• The progression of the Beatitudes.
