In this episode of Unpacking the Issue, we dive deep into the overcrowding crisis inside Benton and Washington county jails, why it’s happening, and what local officials, justice reform advocates, and community leaders say needs to change. As populations in both counties have surged far beyond earlier projections, county jails built decades ago are now strained beyond capacity. Sheriffs say they need more space to safely house inmates and maintain operations. Justice reform advocates argue the state and counties must look at alternatives—from new sentencing approaches to system-wide changes that reduce reliance on jail beds.

In Part 1, we break down the history of the jails in Benton and Washington counties, how quickly the region’s population has outpaced original forecasts, and why officials believe the facilities are stretched to their limits.

In Part 2, we examine recent expansion proposals, including those rejected by voters, and explore ongoing construction funded by federal relief money.
