The 2017 Subaru Impreza rides an all-new, much stiffer platform, but maintains the strengths that have made it successful for more than two decades as a practical, safe, all-wheel-drive car. Whether those strengths will be enough to keep the Impreza selling in the face of America’s current crossover onslaught or not, this is a terrific car that starts at well under $20K, includes all-wheel drive and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offers EyeSight, a very strong active safety package.

All Imprezas get Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp “boxer” 4-cylinder, which offers a compact, low-vibration setup, mated to a continuously variable transmission, with estimates of 38 mpg highway, 28 city. The 2017 version of the CVT shifts more quickly between Reverse and Drive, which will ease parallel parking, but the powertrain sounds unrefined overall.
