ĀSIYAH: FAITH THAT DEFIES POWER [66:11]
There are moments in the Qur’an where Allah ﷻ doesn’t just tell us what to believe — He shows us what belief looks like.
And sometimes… that model isn’t a Prophet ﷺ.
It’s a woman.
Allah ﷻ says:
وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱمْرَأَتَ فِرْعَوْنَ
“And Allah presents an example for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh.”
(66:11)
Pause there.
Allah ﷻ doesn’t say: an example for women.
He says: for those who believe.
Men and women. All believers.
And who was she?
Āsiyah wasn’t living on the margins.
She lived inside Pharaoh’s palace — in the heart of the most tyrannical system the Qur’an describes.
And yet her soul remained free.
That’s the first lesson: īmān isn’t shaped by your environment — it transcends it.
We often tell ourselves:
“If I had better surroundings… I’d be more religious.”
“If I made hijrah… I could stop sin”
“If my workplace was purer… I’d be stronger in faith.”
“If my home was easier… I’d be closer to Allah ﷻ.”
Āsiyah dismantles that excuse completely.
She had every reason not to believe.
Every incentive to comply.
Every comfort to stay silent.
And yet, when the truth came, she recognised it.
Then listen to her duʿāʾ:
رَبِّ ٱبْنِ لِى عِندَكَ بَيْتًۭا فِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ
“My Lord, build for me with You a house in Paradise…”
She doesn’t ask for a palace (Qasr). She already has one. A humble house (bayt) is enough
What is placed ahead of anything is proximity – ʿindaka — with You.
Because she saw through power and luxury.
She understood that wealth isn’t honour… and authority isn’t safety.
Proximity to Allah ﷻ is the only real value.
Then she says:
وَنَجِّنِى مِن فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ
“Save me from Pharaoh and his deeds…”
Not just Pharaoh — his way, his system, his corruption.
How often do we curse today’s oppressors, yet still crave the gluttony and desire-fuelled consumerism they sell us?
We curse Israel, yet struggle to leave our Big Mac and Starbucks coffee
Āsiyah’s greatness isn’t loud rebellion.
It’s independence of heart.
And that’s why Allah ﷻ chose her as a model for all believers:
You can live inside corruption… without becoming it.
You can be surrounded by disbelief… and still belong to Allah ﷻ.
A woman, singled out for all humanity to learn from
Real īmān doesn’t bend to power.
It transcends it.
