Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a joint press conference in Istanbul, addressing regional security, energy cooperation, and Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Erdogan strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, calling it “illegal and unacceptable” and warning that it risks destabilising the Horn of Africa. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, stressing that decisions about Somalia’s future must reflect the will of the Somali people.
The talks also delivered major announcements on energy and development, including plans for offshore oil and gas drilling beginning in 2026, the deployment of Turkish deep-sea drilling ships, and an ambitious proposal to build a spaceport in Somalia with support from Turkey’s space agency.
President Mohamud praised Turkey’s long-standing role in security cooperation, counterterrorism, humanitarian aid, and mediation, and highlighted Somalia’s historic municipal elections in Mogadishu, calling them a milestone toward democratic governance.
