Ericaceous soil is an acidic soil named after the plants that prefer to grow in it, as opposed to alkaline based soil. Ericaceous plants are lime-hating plants, that do not grow well in alkaline-based soils.

Why do these plants need ericaceous compost?
Ericaceous plants grown in alkaline or lime soils are more prone to a condition known as lime-induced chlorosis, where their healthy green leaves turn yellow. Such plants do not grow or develop well, flower and fruit production is reduced, and the plants eventually die.

In order to thrive, ericaceous plants require nutrients, such as iron, which they absorb from the soil through their roots. A soil high in pH effectively locks up these nutrients, making them insoluble, therefore preventing the plants from absorbing these vital nutrients.
