They were often immigrants or first-generation Americans, and they came from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Many of them were unskilled laborers, but some were skilled craftsmen.
The working conditions of these construction workers for building in New York were incredibly dangerous and difficult. They worked long hours, paid very low wages, and often worked in dangerous conditions.
Despite the challenges they faced, construction workers in the 1920s & 30s played an essential role in building the infrastructure of New York City. They helped to make New York City the city it is today.
