A massive long-range swell from Hurricane Marie has battered the Southern California coastline, causing severe erosion, coastal flooding, and structural damage along several oceanfront communities. Although the Category 2 storm remained hundreds of miles offshore in the eastern Pacific, its powerful wave energy combined with unusually warm ocean temperatures and high tides to breach seawalls, strip beaches, and undermine building foundations.
Impacts were heavily felt along the Long Beach Peninsula, as well as in Seal Beach, Dana Point, and Malibu. Dozens of homes and properties faced mandatory evacuations, structural tagging, or severe access restrictions due to collapsed ground, compromised seawalls, and flooded interiors.
In this video, we examine how offshore swell dynamics combined with elevated tides to overtop coastal defenses, the extent of structural damage across Southern California beaches, and the ongoing emergency repairs and dredging projects aimed at restoring the coastline before winter.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
