This ballet evening brings together three works by three groundbreaking 20th century choreographers.
With the Ballets Russes and later his own New York company, George Balanchine wrote an important chapter in the history of abstract dance. In his »Theme and Variations« he quotes from the lexicon of classical ballet, provocatively re-examining its notions of technical perfection in tutu and en pointe.
William Forsythe is not only a great admirer of Balanchine but also someone frequently described as the most important choreographer at work today. The pas de deux from his »Neue Suite«, specially arranged for the Semperoper Ballett, are in their radical focus on the dancers’ movements a consistent development of Balanchine’s approach.
