The propagation of cracks in a tube subjected to high pressure was analyzed using the direct crack propagation method, which is based on the criteria of the total energy release rate (TERR). The TERR is a measure of the energy required to propagate the crack, and it is related to the stress intensity factor (SIF) at the tip of the crack. The SIF is a measure of the stress concentration at the crack tip, and it is influenced by the material properties, the applied load, and the geometry of the tube.
An analytical method, the Griffith equation was used to predict the SIF and the TERR along the crack path. The Griffith equation is an empirical equation that relates the SIF and the TERR to the crack growth rate, which is the rate at which the crack propagates. This equation is often used to predict the crack growth rate in brittle materials, such as ceramics or metals.
