7. Why Moon Had to face the curse of Lord Ganesha?

It is said that anyone who looks at the moon on the night of the Ganesh Chaturthi will be falsely accused.
What is this story and how is it connected to the moon and the curse?
Some references say that this story follows right after Ganesh leaves Kuber’s palace. But most stories indicate to have happened on Ganesh Chaturthi.
On this day, Ganesha was riding on his little rat and suddenly a snake crossed his path.The rat was terrified and ran off in fright due to which Ganesha fell down in a thorny bush. The Moon was looking at this from the sky and he laughed loudly at the funny sight of Ganesha's falling down. Angrily Ganesha broke one of his tusks and threw it at the Moon cursing him to become invisible by losing all his charm. Moon lost his brightness and then became invisible. The world became dark. All the gods then, prayed to Ganesha, to give back the Moon, his brightness. The Moon also repented and fell at Ganesh's feet for forgiveness. Ganesha replied that he could not take away a curse which has been given but he can grant him a boon reducing the power of his curse. He said to the moon, "The first fifteen days of every month,you will get bigger and then the next fifteen days,you will become smaller and smaller. At the end of the month you will look like my tusk. And on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi the person who looks at the Moon will have an allegation on him. If someone inadvertently sees the moon on this night, he/she gets remedy only by listening to (or reciting) the story of the syamantaka mani or jewel found in the 'Puranas' or ancient Hindu scriptures.
