The word "Shamisen" (三味線) literally translates as "Three Flavor Strings". While I don't definitively know why the word 'flavor' is there, it makes a lot of sense. For only three strings, there is an incredible amount of dynamics we can add with the shamisen.

However, I suspect that most shamisen enthusiasts only make use of half of the shamisen's dynamic abilities. Naturally, we're focused on learning new songs. Once we learn a song, we'll move on to the next song. Building up a sizable repertoire is a great thing to do. That said, playing the basic melody uses less than half of the shamisen's potential for a sensual musical experience.

From here on, I would like us to take a deeper look into songs and discover where we can add flavor, perhaps where we never though it could be added before!

After watching this month's lessons, I would like participants to think about how they add flavor to their favorite song (minyo or otherwise).
