Setting up a boring bar in a CNC lathe may seem daunting, especially if you're new to turning operations, but it’s a fundamental skill that unlocks a wide range of internal machining capabilities. In this article, we’ll walk you through a high-level look at the process of setting up a boring bar on the Tormach 8L CNC lathe, covering essential tooling tips, proper alignment, and how to input the setup into PathPilot®, Tormach’s powerful CNC control system.
When working on the Tormach 8L, a common choice is a small boring bar included in the Deluxe Professional Lathe Tool Kit. These bars are compatible with 0XA quick-change tool holders used on the 8L lathe. Two common tool holders used for boring bar setups include the standard boring bar holder and a boring/facing tool holder. While both can be used effectively, the boring/facing holder is often a more approachable starting point for beginners.
A key factor to consider is the geometry of your boring bar. Many bars include flats for secure mounting, while others are round and fit best in holders with a V-notch. Either way, ensuring a solid fit will reduce deflection and improve cut quality.
