Behind the Counter at a Japanese Mom and Daughter Teishoku Restaurant

Today, I’m going behind the counter at Shifuku Shokudo, a family run teishoku restaurant in Tokyo’s Kichijoji area that serves around 150 meals a day. Teishoku is everyday Japanese home style cooking, built around balance and simplicity. A typical set includes a main dish like grilled fish, chicken, or pork, served with rice, miso soup, and pickles. Because of its variety and affordability, this shop has become a go to lunch spot for locals, often forming a line before the doors even open.

Each morning begins with preparing the handwritten menu board. Since the dishes change daily, it lets passersby know exactly what will be served that day. Behind the menu is Natsumi san, who previously worked as a menu developer for cafés in Omotesando, Akasaka, and Kichijoji. Now she brings that experience into her own kitchen, creating dishes freely with the freshest ingredients. This flexibility is why the menu changes every day and why regulars return multiple times a week.

Her mother grew up in Tokyo and, after raising two daughters, made a quiet promise to cook homemade meals every day. Teaching herself through books and old magazines, she slowly built her skills, passing her love for cooking down to her daughter.
