Thor’s Cave is a natural cavern set in a steep limestone crag in the Peak District. It has a huge arched entrance that is easily visible from the footpath on the scenic Manifold Way below.
Thor’s Cave is popular with visitors and the views out into the valley are spectacular, but great care should be taken in exploring. The cave entrance itself is only accessible on foot, on routes that are very steep and can be slippery.
Evidence has been found of human occupation of Thor’s Cave during the latter Stone Age, from around 11,000 years ago, with use well into the Iron Age and Roman period. Past excavations have found stone tools, pottery, amber beads and bronze items, as well as the burial sites of at least seven people.
There is a small free car park with public toilets near Thor's Cave in the village of Wetton.
