Wildlife Service Award 2024: Dr. P. Sathiyaselvam

Описание: Zoologist and conservationist Dr P. Sathiyaselvam took an unexpected path into wildlife science when a teachers' strike shifted his plans from medicine to zoology. That detour sparked a deep and lasting passion for birds and wetlands. During his Master's in Wildlife Biology, a failed bird identification test became a moment of resolve rather than defeat. He went on to identify over 500 bird species and has ringed more than 20,000 individuals across 300 species in India.

His work has been instrumental in shaping conservation policy, especially for migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway. He has contributed to international collaborations, led vital research in avian disease surveillance, and extended his efforts to marine life, including whale sharks and sea turtles. Despite long stretches away from family, his commitment to both wildlife and community remains constant. In recognition of his quiet yet powerful contributions, Dr Sathiyaselvam was named a recipient of the 2024 Sanctuary Wildlife Service Award.
