Afterwards, the fruits have to be dried. To do this, they are cut open, spread out on pallets and placed in the sun. Grandmother Vassiliki, 90 years old, then presses two fig halves on top of each other to make an "askada". No one else is allowed to do this, because the pairs have to fit perfectly together - this is no different with figs than with people, says Vassiliki. The family prepares traditional and new dishes from the figs: pork with figs, figs wrapped in bacon, salad with figs, fig bread or chutney.
