In the vast, rain-soaked wilderness of southeast Alaska, survival was supposed to be simple. I worked as a seasonal ranger assistant, spending my days maintaining trails, checking wildlife activity, and living quietly in the shadow of towering spruce trees. To escape the noise of the world, I spent two summers building a treehouse refuge thirty-five feet above the forest floor—a place I called The Canopy Redoubt. It was meant to be a personal retreat, a vantage point for watching storms roll in and listening to the forest breathe. But when the dead began to rise and the first reports of violent, unexplainable attacks reached us over emergency channels, that quiet retreat became my only safe ground.
What followed was a fight for survival in one of the most unforgiving landscapes on Earth. Cut off from towns that fell silent overnight and surrounded by infected people moving through the forest below, I relied on engineering, planning, and isolation to stay alive. But the forest was changing. The infected were learning. Wildfire smoke rolled across the mountains. And as the world beneath my platform descended into chaos, I had to decide whether to hold my ground in the treetops or abandon the sanctuary I built with my own hands
