Teachers be ok with sharing control, learn how to control YOUR behavior

Teachers who ruled with an iron fist succeeded because they operated within a system that ignored disability, trauma, racism, poverty, and intrinsic motivation.

With the increase of prison rates, suicides, and crime along with better understanding of the brain, we changed the system to be better.

BUT

We didn't realize that traditional hierarchical systems ONLY work if you can CONTROL the population with fear (punishments) or bribery (reward systems).

If you want the truth- You are NOT in control, the students are, there are more of them.

You can get angry & burn out or you can learn how to do better.

Understand these 3 points:
👉 Power is negotiated and belongs to the GROUP
👉 Students have JUST AS MUCH RIGHT to the expectations & space as YOU do
👉 You CAN'T be triggered by point one and two

THAT'S THE BIG THING RIGHT? THE TRIGGER

The trigger response of NOT feeling in "control".
The spiral, overwhelm, fear, anger & eventually resentment.

Students need community, leadership and INFLUENCE but WILL RESIST feeling controlled.

You have to be O.K with a lil bit of chaos, a lil bit of uncertainty, a lil bit of communal energy and negotiation.

AND YOU CAN BE. YOU TOTALLY CAN BE!!

But you have to know:
👉 Your triggers
👉 Your students' triggers
👉 How to regulate your stress response
