The buttpad that Boyds puts on their Pro Varmint stock is not suitable for cartridges with even moderate recoil. I am swapping it in favor of a Pachmayr Decelerator.
The original butt pad on our Boyds Pro Varmint stock was a thin strip of hard rubber. This Pachmayr recoil pad is much thicker and softer, featuring empty cubes molded inside the pad. As it ships from the factory, the Decelerator has an ovoid shape; we will need to reshape this to match the contours of the rifle stock.
Tools needed:
1. Phillips Screwdriver
2. Exacto Knife
3. Belt Sander
4. Sanding Block
5. Bench Vise
Materials Used:
1. Grease
2. Chalk
3. Masking Tape
4. Polyurethane
This tutorial is part of our "1000 Yards for $500" series, where I am converting a Savage Axis into a long-range precision rifle.
