K-문화 이슈_OTT 10년, K-콘텐츠 판은 어떻게 바뀌었을까
In January 2016, ten years ago, Netflix launched its service in Korea since then, streaming platforms have become mainstream. In the past, dramas and variety shows were planned around TV scheduling—but today, many productions are developed with global releases on streaming services in mind from the very beginning. From production budgets and workflows to viewing habits, the entire ecosystem has changed. Let's take a look back at the past decade of streaming platforms and discuss where the future may be headed with Chie Hye-won, culture critic and professor at Kyung Hee University. Welcome back, Professor Chie!
Q1. It’s already been ten years since the world's most-watched OTT platform Netflix entered the Korean market.
Watching content on Netflix, Disney+, Tving, or Coupang Play now is part of our daily lives. Compared to a decade ago, what do you think has changed the most?
Q2. Looking back over the past ten years, there seem to be certain works that truly reshaped the streaming platform landscape.
Which titles would you consider the most symbolic or influential here in Korea?
Q3. Local elements—such as Joseon-era zombies or traditional Korean games—ended up gaining strong global appeal. Why do you think this was possible?
Q4. From a creator’s perspective, do you see greater freedom since the appearance of streaming platforms or are we also seeing new standards and constraints?
Q5. In the past, programs were produced mainly within broadcasting stations, but production systems have changed significantly. Should this be seen as a weakening of television, or as a restructuring of the production ecosystem?
Q6. Despite the rise in production budgets, debates over IP ownership and profit-sharing structures have deepened.
Where do you think the core frustrations within the industry lie right now?
Q7. Although there appears to be an abundance of content, some viewers say there’s “nothing to watch,” while domestic streaming platforms are said to be struggling under rising production costs. How should we interpret this trend, and how do you see the next decade in the content industry unfolding?
Thank you for your insights Professor Chie, have a wonderful weekend and stay warm.
Thank you Walter, have a great weekend and see you on Monday.
