FORGIVE THE HATERS | Found Footage from the Present | By Matt Zien of KNGMKRLabs
I think this is an absolutely spectacular #generativeai #musicvideo, because it cuts directly to the heart of the matter. Take the 5m to watch, because I guarantee it speaks to all the haters with compassion, not bile.
Let me share a personal anecdote:
I am one of those persons who spent a great deal on their education. Not because I wanted to, but because I knew firsthand, from my father sacrificing everything for me, that education (and continuous learning) is what can help you to exit poverty.
On the one hand, I am mortified that all that time, sacrifice, energy, and money seems wholly obliterated by everything that has advanced in the past ~three years. I am also old enough to appreciate we had a similar cycle in #animation and #VFX when the world went from analog, to the shiny new toys of digital, shifting from mostly practical special effects to visual effects.
What did people say and do? The same as now, but this was also before the Internet and home PCs were widespread, so there wasn't the same chorus of seemingly limitless voices of rage and despair. Most of the commentary was limited to big media outlets and niche community magazines.
I am that last guy in the video. Granted, I'm not that old, but I can say from the countless VFX people in my orbit who talk to me privately, how they're simultaneously angry, disgusted, and afraid. Then, there are the handful, like myself, who don't share what we're doing, or learning, because it's a double-edged sword.
As I will share in my next post, when #JamesCameon goes from hater to embracing ethical, #generativeai. Remember, this is the man who, aside #GeorgeLucas, basically forced the entire industry to adopt digital by sheer force of will AND BY EXAMPLE. The same will be true of #GenAI.
Why? For the same reasons we shifted from analog, costs mostly. As Jim elucidates, movies like his, or others of such spectacle, are not sustainable by current means. Something has to give. Either the industry embraces this new approach to #filmmaking, or we're going to continue to see companies like #Marvel pack up and take all of their operations overseas, even when they're granted incentives from 20% to 30%.
Those incentives are not enough to make the films profitable, or pay the salaries of those involved stateside. "It's not anything personal, it's just business," as they say. Those in the USA have been fortunate enough to have the standard of living that they do, but it has a price tag. Unfortunately, it's not competitive, and we live in a global workforce.
Few Americans are going to compromise that quality of life, so, the business goes elsewhere. You want to compete? Then generative ai is the unlock for the next few decades, until the next paradigm shift emerges.
Will making the jump accommodate everyone? No, there will always be casualties, I can't sugarcoat the reality of this bitter and jagged little pill.
I understand if you hate, but it doesn't alter the reality of business economics.
