Last week, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops briefly published an essay titled “DEI Means God,” which was later removed. The essay was written by Bishop Roy Campbell, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, D.C. In it, he reflected on diversity, equity, and inclusion through a theological lens, linking the Latin word Deus meaning God to human dignity, solidarity, and social responsibility.
The essay quickly sparked online debate, especially around how concepts like equality and equity are defined, applied, and understood in public life versus Catholic social teaching. Soon after, the USCCB clarified that the essay did not represent the conference’s official position, and it was removed from publication.
The episode has reopened broader conversations among Catholics about the relationship between faith and contemporary political language, the boundaries of episcopal authority, and questions of trust and transparency in Church leadership.
