The programme aims to replace ageing platforms like the An-32 and Il-76, which have been in service for over four decades and are now facing serious maintenance and operational challenges. Three major contenders are in the race, the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium, and the Airbus A400M Atlas. Each offers a different balance of payload, efficiency, and industrial collaboration. With 48 of the 60 aircraft to be manufactured in India, the deal is also expected to play a major role in boosting the country’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
