India’s long-delayed medium transport aircraft programme is finally moving forward, with the Defence Procurement Board clearing a ₹1 lakh crore project to acquire 60 aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The programme aims to replace ageing platforms like the An-32 and Il-76, which have been in service for over four decades and are now facing serious maintenance and operational challenges. Three major contenders are in the race, the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium, and the Airbus A400M Atlas. Each offers a different balance of payload, efficiency, and industrial collaboration. With 48 of the 60 aircraft to be manufactured in India, the deal is also expected to play a major role in boosting the country’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. But with multiple approval stages still ahead, the real question remains—will this programme finally reach the finish line after decades of delays?
