🥾 THE ADVENTURE KIT (APPAREL & GEAR)
When you're tackling the NZ bush, your gear has to survive the "squish." I swear by my Terrex AX4 GORETEX Hiking Shoes (https://tidd.ly/4rsHbFL)—they are the only reason I didn't lose a shoe to the Mahurangi mud today! Sneakers definitely wouldn't have cut it on those slippery gradients.

🇳🇿 THE FACTS: Cudlip Point Loop
• Location: Mahurangi Regional Park (West), Auckland, New Zealand
• Distance: 3.5km / 2.17mi
• Time: 1 hour
• Difficulty: Easy/Medium
• Weather: 22 degrees
• Key Sights: Panoramic views of Mahurangi Harbour, Te Muri Beach, Saddle Island, and a very friendly welcoming committee of fantails.
⛰️ EXPECTATION VS. REALITY (THE GOOD & THE BAD)
The Reality? It’s stunning, but she’s muddy! The online photos make it look like a dry stroll, but in reality, it’s a "nature’s stairmaster" with steep, grassy climbs that turn into a bog after rain. The "official" lookout is a bit of a letdown due to overgrown foliage, but the journey along the ridgeline is where the real magic (and the best views) actually happens.
🗿 CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Mahurangi area is rich in Māori history, traditionally known as a place of abundant resources for the Ngāti Paoa and Ngāti Rongo peoples. The name "Mahurangi" itself relates to "fleshy sky," and you’ll feel that spiritual connection when the Piwakawaka (fantails) follow you—in Māori tradition, they are often seen as messengers or guides.
💪 THE FITNESS GAINS
This 3.5km loop is a cardio winner. Because of the "resistance band" effect of the mud and the sharp initial gradients, you’re burning way more calories than a flat pavement walk. It’s the perfect 1-hour workout to get your steps in while distracting your brain with epic coastal views.
