Transition goals for high school students are the basis of a student’s (or young adult’s) plan for their future. As educators, our first responsibility is to help our students to reach their goals. In addition, we also have the legal requirement to write measurable goals and goals that are compliant.
Here are the IDEA 2004 requirements for writing compliant post secondary goals:
• Each transition aged student with an IEP must have appropriate measurable postsecondary goals based upon age appropriate transition assessment related training, education, employment, and where appropriate – independent living skills [34 CFR 300.320 (b)]
• Must be written for after the student graduates from high school or leaves a school program
• Can be written using the student’s first name or in first person (“I”)
• Must be measurable to the extent of which or which the goal can be determined
• Use “will” phrases like “will gain full time employment” or “will attend a 2 year college”
In addition to following these requirements, Ten Sigma also recommends using the “When, What, and For What Purpose” formula. This formula clearly communicates when the student will accomplish the goal, what the student will be doing, and for what purpose they are doing that goal. To be clear, IDEA 2004 only requires the “when” and “what” portion of the formula, but we suggest including the “For What Purpose” segment to help students (who are able to do so) to make the connection to why they are taking the steps they have identified in their goals.
Here is an example of a postsecondary employment goal written using this formula:
“After Jenny graduates from high school, she will work part-time as a dishwasher in her family restaurant to pay for her trade school classes.”
By following the IDEA 2004 requirements and the formula explained above, you will ensure that your students’ transition iep goals are measurable and compliant.
