The backlog at the Ontario Landlord & Tenant Board is unacceptable, standing at over 53,000 cases. It has left both landlords and tenants across Scarborough Southwest and throughout Ontario desperately waiting for action from the board.
The recent Tribunals Watch Ontario report highlights that this is a direct result of Ford’s Conservatives stacking the tribunal with political appointments, over those who have years of experience in this field. Amidst the most severe housing and homelessness crisis this has significant personal costs on individuals including lost housing, poor living conditions for tenants, and significant financial hardships particularly impacting small landlords.
My Ontario NDP colleagues and I are calling on this government to implement the Ombudsman’s reforms to the LTB, so people receive the justice they need.
