Iranian authorities have cut off nearly 40,000 Starlink satellite internet connections in an effort to hide violent clampdown and the killing of protesters amid nationwide rallies that have swept through the country since December 2025. The decision to target Starlink connections, highlights escalation in the government’s digital crackdown and its determination to silence dissent amid spreading protests. Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB that announced the government’s decision to cut off dozens of thousands of Starlink satellite connectors on Tuesday, framed the move as an effort to halt the “US-Israeli terrorist operations” inside the country. The broadcaster claimed satellite-based connections had been used by what it called hostile networks, while blaming the United States and Israel for what it described as a campaign of unrest. Iran imposed complete internet blackout on January 13, two weeks into the anti-government protests that erupted in late December over mounting economic problems and the crash of the national currency. The internet blackout stopped the information flow, making it difficult for local media outlets, websites and social media users to load videos in web browsers. Despite the internet blackout, Iranians were able to share some of the videos of the protests and the government’s crackdown thanks to Elon Musk’s Starlink service. However, the government is now aiming at complete shutdown of the internet, intensifying its efforts to jam Starlink service, which is banned in Iran and its users are being hunted. Addressing Iran’s internet blackout, the US State Department said on January 16 that the internet shutdown was aimed at concealing the violent crackdown on anti-government protesters. “The total and nationwide internet cutoff in Iran has now entered its second week, more than 190 hours in which the Islamic Republic regime has deliberately cut off the Iranian people from the world,” the department’s Persian-language account said on X.
