I had the incredible opportunity to create an ukiyo-e woodblock print at the Tokyo National Museum, and it was a truly engaging experience. Ukiyo-e, which translates to “pictures of the floating world,” emerged during the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) and is known for its vibrant depictions of landscapes, kabuki actors, beautiful women, and scenes of everyday life. The process itself—carving the woodblocks, applying the ink, and printing onto paper—was a fascinating way to connect with this timeless art form. What kind of design or scene did you choose to work on?
