There are concerns that the shut down of taxi operations may spread to areas beyond Ekurhuleni.
Earlier, the South African National Taxi Council, SANTACO, in Gauteng said only parts of Ekurhuleni would be affected.
This follows threats of a shutdown in the province yesterday after officials from the Transport Department impounded 17 taxis for offences including unroadworthy vehicles.
Taxi operations in Benoni, Katlehong and Kempton Park were disrupted, leaving many commuters stranded.
