Lead Steward and Board President Erica Zenzele Hardison, Youth Engagement Coordinator Amber Woods, and Communications Director Kaye Haynes sit down to reflect on their work with One Community Grocery Co-op in St. Petersburg, Florida. Since beginning their co-op, more community members have become aware that food apartheid is not natural, they are armed with new language and models for food, and feel empowered to change their conditions through food pantries and other offerings.
One Community Grocery Co-op is working to build a community-owned retail grocery store in South St. Petersburg, Florida. They strive to build a place for shopping, gathering, learning about food & nutrition, and supporting local healthy food providers. As a cooperative, they are governed by a democratic process that includes all member/owners. This ensures their commitment to building a viable store that can serve the community for decades to come.
