Voting for municipal corporation elections will be held in Maharashtra today. Voting will begin at 7:30 AM in 29 municipal corporations across the state. 15,931 candidates are vying for 2,869 seats in these 29 municipal corporations. The fate of these candidates will be decided by 34.9 million voters in the state. Voting will also take place for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today, where elections are being held after 2017. This year's BMC election is particularly interesting because, for the first time, the Shiv Sena and NCP are facing each other after splitting into two factions. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have joined hands after 20 years. Marathi identity is the most prominent issue in the BMC elections. If this issue resonates with voters, the BMC elections will have a very different outcome. The unity of the MahaYuti alliance appears weak in the BMC elections. The BJP is contesting 137 seats, and the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena is contesting 90. This agreement was finalized in December 2025. However, Ajit Pawar's NCP has fielded candidates in 94 seats, which is likely to lead to vote splitting due to friendly contests in several wards.
