Just a short ride from Quebec City, we made our way across a huge bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River and suddenly found ourselves on L'il d'Orleans, an idyllic little island nicknamed the 'Garden of the St Lawrence'. Unknown to most tourists L'il d'Orleans is a hidden gem on the Canadian cultural landscape and a place that is definitely worth a visit any time you're in Quebec.
L'il d'Orleans is said to be the 'birthplace of Francophone culture in North America' and still retains much of its traditional French way of life. Still today a large percentage of French Canadians can trace their ancestry to the first residents of the little island. The main economic activities on the island are agriculture and tourism.
The island gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year from all over Canada and the world. They stay in the many cozy B&B's and inns, and tour the art galleries, cafes, restaurants, orchards, cheeseries and wineries. While the GCAT crew was there, we stopped at a gorgeous black current vineyard, Cassis Monna & Filles, which is one of Canada's most renowned Crème de Cassis producers.
Cassis Monna & Filles is a beautiful black current vineyard run by two elegant and friendly sisters. They have taken over the operation from their parents who have built the vineyard into gorgeous little café & restaurant overlooking the St Lawrence, and are producer of everything black current. Renowned for their award winning Crème de Cassis (which earned a Gold Medal Award in Europe in 1995) Cassis Monna & Filles make an array of black current products including apertif wines, crème de cassis, sangria, jelly, syrup, onion jam and various other delicacies. All the black currents come from their own vineyards scattered around the island.
The vineyard and the island are indeed a hidden gem of culture, art and natural beauty that is not to be missed. Whether you spend the weekend or just spend a day it is well worth a visit. And, when you stop at Cassis Monna & Filles please say hello to them from the GCAT crew.
