Dr Giridhar R Babu, Professor & Head of Life Course Epidemiology, PHFI says:
Vaccines will have to be updated to fight new variants and vaccine coverage must be expanded.
Most people are rushing to get vaccinated with the notion that it will benefit them since second wave of covid-19 has begun.
The benefits of the vaccine kick in only 2 weeks after taking the second dose of vaccine in preventing death or severe illness.
India produces nearly 3-3.5 mn doses of vaccines per day but needs 7-10 mn doses of vaccine per day to cover the most vulnerable population of India to reduce the mortality in India.

Nithya Subramanian, Director, Sanford Bernstein, says:
Globally there are roughly 14 billion doses of vaccines announced for manufacturing between all vaccine manufacturers.
There is huge disparity in vaccines announced for developed and developing countries.
Developed nations have double or triple booked the number of vaccines they needed to vaccinate their entire population.
Serum Institute of India produces roughly 70 million doses of Covishield per month but it is not enough to meet domestic demand. They have committed 200 million doses to GAVI and those commitments remain too.
Sputnik, Johnson and Johnson, Dr Reddy's COVID-19 vaccine EUA will ensure capacity boost for India.
