Shieldaig to USAAF Liberator Memorial Site walk

Описание: This is a very short walk but a respectful one. The walk starts from the car park on the other side of the road from the Shieldaig Lodge near Gairloch and it's only ca 2 miles there and back. Loose stone hill track with a fair bit of mud! There were 3 of us; Peter Davidson and Phil Preston (both friends and we observed the latest COVID restrictions and gave their permission to have them in this video in public view).
The destination was the Fairy Loch. The Fairy Lochs is a recent English name for Na Lochan Sgeireach which are a small group of freshwater lochans approximately 2 mi (3.2 km) south-east of the village of Badachro, near Gairloch in Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands; and have become known as the 'Fairy Lochs' due to their proximity to 'Sìthean Mòr' which translates as 'Big Fairy Hill'🧚‍♂️ The path is well marked, and it is about a 45 minute gentle climb upwards from the hotel; and around 550 yds once on the track you will see the sign directing walkers to the crashed bomber site. The path winds its way up with the Fairy Lochs on the left. The midges were out in clouds today and the donning of PPE + SMIDGE was eventually required - although initially I tried to do without any PPE - hence some shaky footage 🥴

The ‘unexpected’ entrance of a Peregrine Falcon🦅 whilst my drone was circumnavigating the Sithean Mor hill was identified by Peter (who is an avid knowledgeable twitcher 🔭).

The site holds remains of an American bomber, from a forlorn engine in the loch to a memorial made from a propeller and a wheel. It is truly solemn and thought-provoking, and classed as a “war grave”. June 1945, the plane was returning to the United States via Keflavik in Iceland, when it ran into the summit of Slioch. In its bid to reach open water to crash land, it pitched into the rocks and crashed into the Fairy Lochs scattering wreckage over a wide area. All 15 crew and passengers on board died in the accident. There is a memorial plaque which was organised by the loved ones of those killed.

https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/#walks is one of my go to sites for walks. I’m using their ‘boot’ scale for my walks so far and I’d give this one a 🥾 . On any walk I do spend a lot of time stopping to take in the views and to take photographs. I have now added a section at the end of the walks video with some of my NIKON D850 photographs. The panoramics are produced in Lightroom and Photoshop by photo merging images.
