This short video explains the requirements set by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and how your marine radio certificate determines your eligibility.
SROCP = Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency
Covers VHF marine radio and AIS.
LROCP = Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency
Covers VHF, MF/HF marine radio and AIS, and is required for vessels using MF/HF equipment.
Both certificates are issued by the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC) and are recognised internationally.
Older marine radio qualifications issued before Digital Selective Calling (DSC) became standard (around 2010) may not meet current AMSA requirements for MMSI applications. AMSA can confirm whether an existing certificate is still valid for MMSI registration.
