A Hidden Gem? $10 for 18 colors! Camel Artist Watercolor Cakes Review (and tube comparison)

Описание: When I spied this little red tin of 18 Camel Artist Watercolor for $10 I had to try it! I had a viewer request a review of it and I like the tube watercolors from the same brand and at that price, I figured it was worth it for the tin if nothing else so I decided to try it! I think they might be selling off old stock for cheap as it looks like they have updated the packaging and previously when I tried to find this set to review it was much more expensive. They also feel much higher quality than the price I paid! You can find the cake sets from different sellers on Amazon, the 18 set I found was the best deal:

*The colors in these sets are basic everyday colors and a fantastic option for someone getting started in watercolor as you will get the feel for good watercolors at a lower price. I'd recommend the cakes for children and the tubes for adults, they dry down and rewet very well. The tubes have more movement in a wet wash. See linked review for more info on the tubes.

Pros:
price
Nice tin
Comes with a nice small brush but I would add a larger round
Very saturated colors (pre-spray for best results)
Colors mix well

Cons:
For this price, I have no qualms about this paint. It's made in India and it can be hard to find sometimes. The colors are basic so if you are in search of more rare pigments you will need to go elsewhere. Also, there is no pigment info on the box, or online that I can find for the cakes, although they did release the pigment info for the tubes.

Bottom line:
Camel/Kamlin is a respected art brand in India, the cakes are non-toxic, vibrant, and much higher quality than the cake-style sets I see peddled in the art stores here for the same price. I will enjoy this set for sketching but I think it is probably best for kids once they are out of the "washable paint" age. Still, I am very happy to have bought this for my watercolor collection. I hope this review helps you decide.
