Starring Patrick McGoohan in his pre-Prisoner days the show follows the exploits of John Drake an independent operative who's ready to take on the 'messy jobs' that MI5 or the CIA would rather not tackle.
Confused as to why both the Capitol Building in the USA and a Morris Minor are seen in the titles? Well, the opening shot is a composite of Washington and The Castrol Building (now Marathon House) on the Marylebone Road in London.
McGoohan disliked the portrayal of violence on screen and refused to be seen wielding a gun. Keen to show absolute fidelity to his wife Joan Drummond, McGoohan also refused to take on-screen romantic roles. His admirable insistence on these values kept him out of the running as a potential James Bond actor.
The theme tune is simply called The Danger Man Theme. It was written by Edwin Astley who also composed the theme tunes for The Saint, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Department S.
After the first run of 39 episodes Danger Man was parked. But with the success of The Avengers and James Bond Danger Man was rebooted in 1964. The later series (aka Secret Agent; John Drake and Destination Danger in different territories) had a different theme tune - High Wire by Edwin Astley in most markets, though in the USA the song Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers was used.
The last couple of episodes were made in colour, but by this stage Patrick McGoohan was bored with the format. He went to see Lew Grade with a detailed proposal for a new series.
Theories abound as to whether or not the new series was direct a continuation of the Danger Man narrative with John Drake simply renamed No 6.
Regardless, Grade trusted McGoohan and gave him the go-ahead ....
