Koraput in Odisha is going viral on social media as the “Mars of Odisha.” But is it really just a visual resemblance, or is there a deeper environmental concern behind it?
In this video, we break down how National Aluminium Company Limited operates its alumina refinery near Damanjodi, using bauxite from Panchpatmali mines. Through the Bayer Process, alumina is extracted—but it also produces a highly alkaline waste called red mud (bauxite residue), which gives the land its Mars-like red appearance.
