Dowry negotiations in Adelaide.
The families of Amath and Deng met on [07/04/2018] to negotiate the bride's dowry. This is a long-standing tradition in the Dinka community and other communities in South Sudan. Today, our people are scattered across the globe and are proud to maintain this culture.
Paying a dowry does not mean the man is buying a woman from her family. The Dinka believe that a human being is priceless and cannot be sold. The dowry is a way for the Dinka to encourage young men to respect women and embrace the responsibilities of manhood.
Usually, the dowry (cattle or money) is divided between the families of the bride and groom.
After the dowry negotiations, the two families, along with neighbors and members of other communities, gather to celebrate the wedding.
We thank all our family and friends who gathered to celebrate the dowry negotiations. Without your time, this celebration would have been impossible, so thank you.
