How to Prune a Lime Tree - Vargas Landscaping Presents

I have some more good knowledge for you.
Today I will be pruning a lime tree. I’m going to do a little bit of canopy reduction.

We aren’t going to thin out the tree that much because it doesn’t need it.
It could be like this for one or two more years.

I’m going to start looking for water growth or suckers.

Suckers are branches that grown from the bottom of the tree.
Water growth, or “air growth” grows out from another branch of the tree.

The sucker grows from the trunk of the tree and you cut it from the collar or ridge of the branch.
All the cuts are at the collar of the branch and I keep repeating it because it’s important to make the right cut.
In each leave, there is a little collar in there where you need to cut.
Not only are the collars on big branches but they are on the small branches.
Cut just above the leave.

By pruning, we direct the growth of the branches. We direct the growth of the future branches.

You stimulate a dormant bud when cutting a branch so think of which way you want the branch to go and cut to direct the branch.

We will do some canopy reduction. Cut the crossing branches and cut the water growth.
Even if there are limes on the branch, it’s okay to cut it.
Cut the branches so it’s in a symmetric shape.

Remember not to leave stubs!

Follow the water growth all the way down to the collar of the branch.

This is all that we need to cut on this tree. This tree has very good branches to produce flowers and fruit. We want this tree to continue this size of canopy. The trees around it have room to go.
