Buddhist monks have been protesting the Bodh Gaya Temple Act (BTA), 1949, demanding its repeal. The Act created a management committee with equal representation from Hindus and Buddhists, but Buddhist groups resent the Hindu-majority influence. The protests began in February 2025 and have escalated with support from various Buddhist organizations. The Bodh Gaya temple, a sacred Buddhist site, has a long history of contention, dating back to the 13th century, when Hindu control was established. Buddhist bodies seek greater autonomy, which the BTA currently limits.
