(21 Jul 2012) On the eve of the one year anniversary of the Utoya Island massacre in Norway, Jorn Overby, marked as a hero for his actions during that day, says he is still haunted by what he saw.
Overby was the first to respond to the shooting on Utoya Island when, after hearing there was trouble, jumped into his boat to see if he could help.
That day, even under gunfire from the rampaging mass murderer Anders Breivik, Overby pulled victims from the water.
For his heroic efforts that day, Overby has received many awards, notably from the Red Cross and the Norwegian Home Guard.
The one dearest to him, however, is a simple crystal plinth from a ten-year-old girl, Therese, who he helped that day.
Overby will proudly read her message to him when asked: "Thank you for rescuing my life. You are my hero. Therese" the tribute says.
Overby will also receive a gold medal of valour from the King of Norway later this year. It is the highest honour to be bestowed on a citizen of the country.
But memories of the atrocious happenings on 22 July 2011 still distress him.
"I start crying too often. It's a thing happening inside the body after that," he explained.
On Saturday troops patrolled the waters around Utoya Island. The government is determined for the area to be secure while survivors and their families attend a memorial ceremony there on Sunday.
Overby says he will spend the day of the anniversary having lunch with one of the survivors and the night out on the surrounding waters in his boat.
