"The shipping industry is at the forefront of the free economy and we're the first ones to feel a recession as well as a boom. In this case, in this scenario what we're going through is not so much a shipping crisis as a whole financial crisis. The lack of liquidity in the banks meant there's no cargos moving, so from one day to the other there's been no volume, no cargos, no movement for the ships. We've seen a major drop in the rates, of something going up to 90-95 percent of what we had compared to a few months ago."

"The crisis has, at the moment, mostly affected dry bulk companies and container ship companies. The tanker and gas companies have been less affected because the freight rates for these kinds of ships have not decreased. An effect for all the companies has been the tightening of credit, which means the banks are far more reluctant to give loans."

The latest spate of pirate attacks is threatening and undermining Europe's shipping industry, already suffering from the effects of the international financial crisis.
As well at the threat of hijacking, the shipping industry is also getting to grips with the global economic crisis.
