Market research firm TrendForce projects that by 2035, demand could jump to over 74 GWh—thousands of times more than today’s levels. For context, current demand stands at just 0.05 GWh in 2026.
The rapid growth is tied to the push for longer endurance and higher-load capabilities in robots. Right now, most humanoid robots rely on liquid lithium batteries, but solid-state options are seen as the future because of their higher energy density. Major players like Tesla’s Optimus Gen2 and Xpeng’s Iron robot are already showing the shift, with Xpeng, GAC, and Engine AI adopting solid-state tech.
Robots today often operate for just 2 to 4 hours, but newer strategies aim to stretch operation time to as much as 8 hours—or even 24—with battery swap systems. Shipments of humanoid robots are expected to surpass 50,000 units in 2026, marking a massive 700% year-over-year increase.
Xpeng also just completed its first robot prototype built to automotive standards, signaling that large-scale production could start later this year.
