In the mid 1900's Russian linguist Yuri Knorozov made ground breaking progress in deciphering the Mayan language. He discovered, that it was partially a Logographic language, mixed with phonetic signs. Which is consistent with the testimony of Nephi which he writes "Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians." (1Nephi 1:2)
The significance of this discovery, is that the Egyptian language was based on Logograms that we call Hieroglyphs. And the Hebrew or Aramaic language is based on a phonetic alphabet.
Thus we see that the Mayan language is consistent with the testimony of Nephi, and also Moroni. "And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech." (Mormon 9:32)
The Book of Mormon was published in 1835. The Mayan language was not fully deciphered till the mid 1900's.
