A documentary about Banksy catapulted Mr. Brainwash to fame, and now he has his own art museum. The gift shop serves as the main entrance.
On December 18 in the Beverly Hills location formerly occupied by the Paley Center for Media, he will unveil his own gallery dedicated to his own work.
Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and Superman share a meal in "Nighthawk," an oil painting by Edward Hopper. On December 18 at the former Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, the Mr. Brainwash Art Museum will open its doors, featuring several works such as this one (465 N. Beverly Drive). This museum has been in the works for at least two years by the prominent contemporary artist and cultural personality. Many well-known persons have purchased works by Banksy since he was featured in the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. However, that is the main entrance of his store.
Thierry Guetta has earned the nickname "Mr. Brainwash" among his peers in the art world. He first mentioned a museum in February of 2020. He said, "It's been a long time" on today's virtual tour. I find myself in an imprisoning situation.
It's not a negative thing to be stranded, Guetta continued. As you put in more effort and try more things, you find that you can accomplish more. His works expanded in size. "Even I can't believe that," I said to myself.
It took Guetta seven months, beginning in 2019, to convince the property's owners to let him rent the three-story Richard Meier (Pritzker Prize winner) building before it is demolished in 2020. It's an artistic thing, Guetta pleaded. Finally, they agreed to go ahead with it.
A month later, delays were being blamed on the pandemic. That's the way it is, he said today; "now or never." Thirteen years ago, Guetta placed on hold the paintings and sculptures he was producing at his busy workshop. More works from 1990 onward will be added to the permanent collection at the Mr. Brainwash Art Museum. Although the museum's website only lists hours of operation between 11 am and 5 pm, director David Guetta has announced that the museum will be open into midnight on select nights.
A framed Mona Lisa mask, maybe the only one in the museum, and a paragraph of wall text provide the simplest method to learn about the artist when visitors enter the glass building through the curved front. It's a rich experience that's difficult to understand due to its many nuances.
A reproduction of Van Gogh's "Bedroom in Arles" can also be found on the ground level. This edition's cushions feature a textured, painterly look and feel. There are recliners throughout the museum, even in the more traditional sections that feature replicas of artworks with Mr. Brainwash additions like cartoon figures and anti-capitalist gags. The next chamber is decked up in Star Wars memorabilia, complete with life-size Storm Troopers, an illuminated Sith, and blacklight-reactive X-wings.
Three sculptures of expensive automobiles are displayed outside the museum, visible via the glass wall that runs parallel to the stairs. The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles has acquired the orange 1973 Porsche 911 that Mr. Brainwash converted into a matchbook automobile. The second level features a space decorated to look like a New York City subway, a hallway with distorted mirrors and blinding lighting, and metal sculptures of the origami he adored as a child.
With the exception of the third-floor open roof, which features a mural of Mr. Brainwash holding a camera and a tribute to Banksy, no photography is permitted anyplace else. "This show is a little more about me," he declared. He then introduced the work of Mr. Brainwash, Thierry. The swimming pool and theater are being planned for a later construction phase.
Although only his own work will be displayed in the Mr. Brainwash museum, his exhibition of the work of other artists will be on view in the next warehouse. The museum will screen rare Banksy film in a theater where regulars include Lisa and Homer.
The museum held a modest toast for its "soft launch" last week, but it won't be available to the public until this weekend. Guetta assumed the VIP party wouldn't happen until much later, perhaps after the Grammys or another event attended by many celebrities. He proclaimed, "It will be a living museum."
The museum will likely travel to other major cities like New York and Miami after the current structure is demolished. Large images of local celebrities like Tupac Shakur and Steve Jobs adorn the walls of this California special version. Each and every object in the museum, he claimed, was created by the artist himself.
According to Guetta, "This is the first show of the new start of my next 10 years." This museum is the seed from which the whole thing grows.
