Cape Spear continues to be protected as a National Historic Site for two main reasons: the age and architecture of the lighthouse and it's significance as a gun battery during the Second World War. The site is also very well known as being the most easterly point of Canada and boasts great views of rare seabirds, whales as well as icebergs
Step back to the 1840's in the Historic Lighthouse to experience the daily life of a 19th century light-keeping family. Hike the headlands, exploring the remains of a Second World War coastal defense battery while watching for hundreds of migrating whales whose arrival is celebrated with an annual Cape Spear Lighthouse Whale Festival. Then, savour the unique experience of afternoon tea in the 1836 lighthouse amid vistas of passing icebergs.
